In a forest full of tall trees and colorful leaves, there lived a little squirrel named Nut. Unlike the other squirrels, Nut had something very special: she was extremely afraid of climbing to the highest branches. While her friends leaped from tree to tree and climbed without a care, she always stayed below, gathering acorns near the ground.
“Why don’t you come with us?” her friends would ask from high up in a giant oak tree.
“It’s just… I’m scared of falling,” Nut replied, looking up with frightened eyes.
Her friends couldn’t understand how a squirrel could be afraid of heights. After all, climbing was natural for them. But no matter how much they encouraged her, Nut still trembled at the thought of going too high.
One day, while searching for food near the trunk of a tree, Nut found a shiny acorn she had never seen before. It was large and golden, as if it had a bit of sunlight trapped inside.
“How beautiful!” she exclaimed excitedly. “I’ll take it to my hiding spot.”
But just as she was about to grab it, a gust of wind sent it rolling toward some rocks farther away. Nut ran after it, but the acorn kept moving until it stopped next to a low branch. To reach it, Nut would have to climb up a little.
“I can’t do it…” she whispered, paralyzed by fear.
At that moment, a wise old owl who lived in the forest appeared, flying slowly and landing near her.
“What’s wrong, little squirrel?” asked the owl in his calm voice.
“I want that acorn, but it’s up there, and I’m really scared to climb,” Nut confessed.
The owl smiled and said:
“Sometimes fear grows because we think about things that haven’t happened yet. If you take one small step, you’ll see that you can achieve more than you imagine.”
Nut thought about the owl’s words. She decided to give it a try. Very carefully, she placed one paw on the low branch. Then another. And another. She was doing it! Her heart was racing, but she kept going until she finally reached the golden acorn.
“I did it!” she shouted happily, holding the acorn in her paws.
From that day on, Nut began to face her fear little by little. First, she climbed low branches, then slightly higher ones, and after a few weeks, she could climb medium-sized trees without trembling so much. Though she still wasn’t as brave as her friends, she was proud of herself.
One day, while playing in a not-so-high tree, she heard a squeal. It was her friend Tilo, a mischievous squirrel, who had gotten stuck on a high branch and couldn’t get down.
“Help!” cried Tilo, terrified.
Nut looked up. The branch where Tilo was perched seemed very high, and her fear returned in an instant. But then she remembered what the owl had told her: “If you take one small step, you can achieve great things.”
She took a deep breath and began to climb slowly. Step by step, she made her way up to where Tilo was. Carefully, she helped her friend climb down, and together they returned to the ground.
“Thank you, Nut! You’re amazing,” said Tilo, full of gratitude.
From that day on, all the squirrels in the forest knew that Nut was brave in her own way. They learned that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to face your fears; what matters is trying and helping others when they need it most.
And so, Nut discovered that being brave doesn’t mean having no fear—it means moving forward despite it.
